# Triage taught as the first genuine skill, and the shift from logistics to her

Lessons 1 and 2 were both knowledge-and-logistics: the gestational clock, the appointment map, the money deadlines. Lesson 3 is the first that teaches a **skill with a decision at the end of it** — given a symptom, decide 999 / call today / normal — and the first on the "supporting her" front of the mission.

Chosen now (Hannah 4+0, 30 Aug 2026) because the window it covers is live: ectopic pregnancy presents weeks 4–12, sickness starts ~week 6 (~13 Sep), peaks ~week 9 (~4 Oct). Teaching it in November would be teaching it after the risk had passed.

## Design decisions worth remembering
- **Three tiers, not two.** A binary "emergency / not" card makes people under-call. The middle tier ("ring the EPU today") is where almost every real event lands, and naming it is what makes the card usable.
- **Shoulder-tip pain got its own emphasis.** It is the single highest-value, lowest-recognition fact in early pregnancy, and it is counter-intuitive enough to survive as a memory hook.
- **A new reusable component**, `assets/triage.css`, rather than one-off markup — three-tier red-flag cards will recur for the third trimester, labour, and the newborn. Reference card `reference/red-flags.html` is the printable form.
- **First use of spacing**: the quiz interleaves one question from Lesson 2 (written notice → redundancy protection). Worth continuing every lesson from here — it is the main lever available for storage strength.
- Miscarriage numbers given straight rather than softened, and framed as a *conditional* risk that drops once a heartbeat is seen. He has consistently responded better to specifics than reassurance (see [[0002-money-constraints-and-contract-cliff]]).

## Open / to check next session
- Whether Hannah has symptoms yet, and which NHS trust they're under — the trust unlocks the actual EPU number, antenatal class booking (~20–24 weeks) and local birth options.
- Still unanswered from Lesson 2: TWP's PAYE start date and salary/dividend split; Herman Miller's enhanced maternity scheme.
- Next lesson planned: **the booking appointment** (~weeks 8–12, so due within the month) — what happens, the screening choices, what to prepare. It is the next thing on his calendar and the first where his role is on the record.
